James Brooks, officer of the colonial government, came to Maryland in 1763 and remained until he fled for England by way of St. Croix in 1781. He supported the British cause during the war by laying low, preserving the records of the colonial Privy Council, and watching the Belvoir estate of a distant relative, Dr. Upton Scott.
