Urmila Seshagiri - "Orienting Virginia Woolf: Race, Aesthetics, and Politics In ‘To the Lighthouse.’"

Both of these works have been addressed in some small part in Imperial Shadows, but in their entirety (or in the chapters selected from Saint-Amour's book) they provide important and interesting analysis of the ways in which the British colonial project worked, and the ways in which this imperial project was represented and reflected in Woolf's literature. Although Saint-Amour's chapter on Woolf does not focus specifically on To the Lighthouse, its analysis of Woolf's style surrounding representations and manifestations of war is still valuable. Seshagiri's article is of particular importance for the nuance with which it approaches Woolf's relationship to empire, a very complicated subject.
