Visualizing Dickinson's Textual Variants: Digital Humanities and Interactive Networks

Dickinson's Textual Variants

This digital humanities project explores Emily Dickinson’s poetic work, focusing on the textual variants that are important to her artistic and literary scholarship. The project aims to apply computational approaches to visualizing these variants and reveals the subtle complexities in her writing. This exploration is conducted with recourse to her manuscripts and the digital edition, incorporating a blend of human and computational analysis.

The main objective of this project is to create visual representations of Dickinson’s base texts and their corresponding variants, showing how they occur together. This project combines digital methods of processing Emily Dickinson Archives as data, managing the data, and extracting relevant features for computation analysis.

The findings show that Dickinson’s textual variants are intricate and interactive, exhibiting different forms and dimensions. These variants play a crucial role in deepening the understanding of Dickinson poetic composition, suggesting that they are more than mere textual alternates, but integral parts of her creative expression.
