were sold for Part Cash and part Credit, The Cash was paid
down in Gold and Silver Says in many Cases Certificates
were partially admitted to be received on the Sales in Lieu of
Gold and Silver, and adds that one Reason of the Difference bet.n
the value of the reserved Lands as stated by M.r Harford to
the Assembly of Maryland, and the Sums they sold for, was
that M.r Harford by the advice of his Counsel greatly
underrated the value of his Lands.
Being asked if he thinks one half of M.r Harford’s
was sold for Certificates _ Says by no means.
Mr,, Smith is shewn the Certificates subjoined to
the Account of Sales and proves the handwriting of Clement
Hollyday G Duvall Dan.l pf S.t Thomas Jennifer and
Thomas Johnson Jun.r thereto.
With respect to the Lands to the westward of Fort
Cumberland _ M.r Smith says he cannot speak to the
Value thereof _ but he bought some in Frederick County which
is next to Fort Cumberland for which he gave 9s/ Currency an
Acre _ The Quantity he bought he is uncertain of _ It was bought
by him to make up a Tract of 9000 Acres which he possessed.
These Lands^of his were much nearer a settled County than
M.r Harford’s.
Being questioned as to what he thinks M.r Harford
would have got for the Tract to the Westward of Fort Cumberl.d
and how he would have valued it as between Man and Man
Says he thinks 3s/ Sterling Per Acre would be a fair price
if it were taken in the Lump and subject to Quit Rent.
