and laid before him a State of the Country and a Plan of
Operations for his Use in that Expedition.

Revd John Montgomery    Sworn
            Has been acquainted with Mr Alexander 20 years. Says
he was always considered as a Man who abhorred the Idea of
Independance and went into the Congress with a View to oppose
it.
            Says he had a Confidential Conversation with Mr Alexander
previous to Sir Wm Howe marching up to Elk and he was then
determined upon Staying there, most of the inhabitants had
moved of their Stock  but Mr Alexander moved nothing.
            Has often been upon Mr Alexanders Estate and he thinks
he has heard it was about 2000 Acres. It appeared to be
a very valuable EstateSituation There was a great deal of Meadow
and a Town beginning there.
            Says he never heard of any Claim against Mr Alexanders
Estate but ever understood it as being quite Clear.
            He has an Idea on his mind that a Mr Gilpin with
whom he had some Conversation respecting Mr Alexander abt
10 years ago and who was himself a Man of Property in
that part of the Country told him on that occasion he thought
him worth £20,000 Currency   but this is a circumstance
he cannot swear positively to.
            With respect to his general Character- Says that
