                           Never received any other Emolument than about
             £30 Currency which was immediately after his Appointment
                           He succeeded Mr Geo: Stewart in the Office.
                           Was informed by his Friends the Fees on an Average
             were worth £100 Stg per. annum. There was no Salary.
Surveyor Genl of the Western Shore.
                           Produces his Commission signed by Sir Robt Eden dated
             28th May 1774.
                           There was no Salary States the Fees at £300 per. Annum
             Held it entirely on his own account without any allowance to Sir
             Robert Eden whom he succeeded in the Office—Says the Office had
             produced more than £300 per annum to Sir Robt Eden but
             never less—
Private Secretary.
                           His Salary as private Secretary to Sir Robert Eden
             was £200 per annum—It was a private appointment of
             Sir Robert Eden and paid by him—
                           Says in consequence of Sir Robt Edens Commission
             as Colonel Commandant he enrolled upwards of 300 Men above
             100 of whom he sent into New York.—He was also at a good deal
             of Expence on this Account—Says he can safely assert he was
             £300 out of Pocket by these means—
Mr William Eddis—Sworn.
                           Was well acquainted with Mr Smith—Says
             he exerted himself in behalf of Governmt in the most distinguished
             Manner before Sir Robt Eden came away and afterward, so
             long as the Witness Staid which was to the 4th June 1777—
                           Heard he had enrolled many Men and understood he sent
