John Henry Carey (dates), commercial ship master and farmer, left behind his wife and five children in Maryland in 1777 for England. Carey claimed a loss for the eight people he had enslaved, as well as the loss of future children from his “breeding” women.

Some themes his Loyalist Claim Commission memorial suggest include commerce, disability, enslavement, family experience, maritime, and material culture.
