Maryland Loyalism Project

The Memorial of John Paterson

John Paterson, an Anglican minister, was jailed for his loyalty until he could escape to Philadelphia in 1778 and eventually to England in 1783. He claimed as a loss 18 people he had enslaved.

Some themes his Loyalist Claim Commission memorial suggest include confiscation, family experience, and persecution.
